Three Races, One Crown: Spec Miata Triple Crown Comes to South Track.
Spec Miata racing has never needed much help creating drama. Give a group of nearly identical cars a race track, put drivers of varying experience behind the wheel and give them a limited number of laps to settle things, and the racing usually takes care of itself.
On Saturday, August 29, that formula gets a slightly different twist at Autobahn Country Club with the Spec Miata Triple Crown on South Track.
Rather than one traditional race, the Triple Crown will be decided over three shorter heat races. Each race will provide another opportunity to gain ground—or lose it—with the combined results determining the overall winner at the end of the day.
That format changes the way drivers have to approach the weekend.
There is no luxury of simply writing off an early mistake and making it back over the course of a long race. Every position matters. Every incident matters. And with three separate starts, there are three opportunities for the field to get shuffled before the final results are decided.
That is precisely what makes Spec Miata racing so entertaining.
The cars may be closely matched, but the drivers certainly aren’t. With horsepower taken largely out of the equation, the competition comes down to racecraft, consistency, bravery and the ability to find a few tenths when it matters most. A small mistake can cost several positions, while a well-timed pass can change the entire complexion of the day.
While the Spec Miatas battle it out on South Track, Autobahn members will still have an opportunity to get behind the wheel themselves, with normal member lapping taking place on North Track.
And the racing weekend doesn’t stop with the Triple Crown. A Spec Racer Ford race will also be part of the schedule, with competition taking place Saturday and Sunday, adding another dimension of open-wheel racing to the weekend.
For those who can’t make it to the track, the Spec Miata action will also be livestreamed on Autobahn’s YouTube channel. That means fans can follow the racing—and the battle for the Triple Crown—from wherever they happen to be.
But if you’ve ever watched a Spec Miata race from trackside, you already know there is nothing quite like being there when the field comes by.
The sound. The close drafting. The late-braking passes. And, inevitably, the conversations in the paddock afterward about the one corner where everything changed.
Three races will determine one winner.
On August 29, South Track gets the Triple Crown treatment. And if history is any indication, the overall winner may not be decided until the final laps.
