Autobahn’s Very Own Ed Dunne

Ed was born 7-11-56.  His lifelong friend Jeff Victor often refers to him as “Horseshoe” because of his birth date.  Sally, his Partner and Mate for 38 years has another name – “Horses *ss” – just kidding.  Life is great for Ed, self-employed used car dealer for over 30 years, living his childhood dream of driving race cars.

He saw his racing future after attending his first USAC stock car race at the famed Milwaukee Mile at age 7.  His parents bought him a plastic crash helmet with goggles which he wore home, then took his Mother’s deck of cards and put them in his bicycle spokes.  He then proceeded to ride around the neighborhood telling everyone he was going to be a race car driver.

At age 15 he got behind the wheel of a Hobby Stock car and when he turned 16 later that year, he moved up to Sportsman Stock cars.  From there Ed moved up to Super Late Model Stock cars.  This continued for many years with the help from his lifelong friend Jeff from Victor Ford Motorsports.  Ed raced many tracks in the Midwest from ¼ mile bullrings to one-mile ovals.  Before receiving his PCA license, he had licenses with USAC, NASCAR, and SCCA.  Ed also crewed for some of the best short trackers in the country including Jim Sauter, Gary Balough and Junior Hanley.  He also raced one of Dick Trickles old cars.

After over 30 years of stock car racing, with hundreds of wins, multiple series championships and track records with a NASCAR Bud Pole Award, it was time to move on.

Next stop was Autobahn Country Club, a private club in Joliet, Illinois.  After winning the FT Challenge Series Championship he moved on to the Chase Race Series.  A friendly rivalry between Ed and Tom Collins began with Tom winning the Championship.  Ed learned from Tom and won the championship the next 3 years while Tom was racing and winning with the PCA.  After an unfortunate wreck at Watkins Glen because of an ABS brake failure, Tom’s SP3 968 racer was destroyed – thank God Tom was OK.

Tom hired Brian Weathered, owner of Midwest Eurosport in Bensenville, IL, the best in the Midwest, along with his crew, led by Tony Reyes and Dan Schubkegel to build a new car.

After a Member’s Racing event at the Autobahn, Tom was showing pictures of the new race car.  Tom asked Ed, “How would you like to be a co-driver at Daytona?” Ed was so honored to have this opportunity.  Tom starts the Enduro running on the bumper of one of the toughest competitors in SP3 racing, Denny Hiffman.  After he pits, he installs 4 new Hoosier “stickers” expecting the car to go to the front.  Ed fades toward the back.  After the race, Ed thoroughly disgusted with his lack of performance, offers to pay for the tires.  “You didn’t go fast enough to hurt them”.  WOW! Talk about twisting the knife.

That was the first race for Team Collins.  With Tom’s PCA Racing experience and coaching, Ed has been very successful.  In his 6th PCA season, Ed has competed in 108 races and won 37% while winning a podium spot in 75% of those races.

Ed tied for the PCA National Championship in 2016 and won the National Championship in 2017 and 2018.  He has also had regional championship wins.  Ed has broken track records at Mid-Ohio, COTA, Sebring, Watkins Glen, and Road Atlanta with three still waiting to be broken.  Ed has also received six Worker’s Choice Awards.

Autobahn Podcast Features David Stephens

After a fantastic weekend at the club, we welcome David Stephens, Manager of Fall-Line Motorsports to the show. Friday night at the end of a Full Track Friday, we enjoyed a great garage crawl. Over 100 people started the evening at one of the new garages where everyone enjoyed appetizers. The party then moved on as all of the crawlers visited two more garages where they were treated to dinner and desserts. We want to give a special thank you to the Club for providing the food and drink for the evening. My wife, Heidi, and I were the last ones to leave and we had a blast! In this show we get to know David Stephens and learn about his background and all about Fall-Line Motorsports.
