Ethan Tyler put together a dominant performance Saturday at Autobahn Country Club, sweeping all three heat races to claim the overall Spec Miata Triple Crown title on August 29.
The unique three-race format brought a different kind of pressure to the Spec Miata field. Rather than determining the winner by a single race result, drivers battled through three short sprint races, with championship points awarded according to finishing position. At the end of the day, the driver with the lowest cumulative point total was crowned the Triple Crown champion.
Tyler left little doubt about who was the class of the field. After taking the checkered flag in the opening heat, Tyler returned to the front in Heat Race 2 and completed the sweep in the day’s final race. The three victories gave Tyler the lowest point total and secured the overall Spec Miata championship. Samuel Bowman finished second overall, while Eamon Ryan completed the Spec Miata podium in third.
With three races packed into a single day, consistency was just as important as outright speed. A driver could recover from a difficult result in one heat, but another mistake or poor finish could quickly change the overall standings. Tyler’s three victories eliminated any question, giving him a perfect scorecard and the Triple Crown title.
The SM2 class featured its own battle for Triple Crown honors, with Sean Benet emerging as the overall winner. Benet put together the strongest three-race performance in the SM2 field to take the class championship, while Dean Schilling finished second overall. Thomas Greenwood rounded out the SM2 podium in third.
The Triple Crown format provided an exciting conclusion to the Spec Miata race weekend at Autobahn, rewarding drivers who could combine speed, consistency and execution across multiple sprint races rather than relying on a single long-distance contest. With Tyler sweeping all three Spec Miata heats and Benet leading SM2, both drivers proved they had what it took to survive the pressure of three races and come out on top when the final points were tallied.
