The USF Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires debuted for their first event of the season on the streets of sunny St. Petersburg, Florida and it was just a preview at the competitive racing we’re sure to see coming up this year. Among the nineteen drivers on the grid was rookie Christian Weir, coming up through the ranks of the USF2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tire and ready to make a name in the series with the two-time Driver and Team FR Americas Champions, TJ Speed.
Starting in the seventh row for race one, Weir was able to get the jump on competitors but couldn’t make it out of corner four cleanly on the opening lap with contact from behind.
Starting in the seventh row again for race two, Christian was able to keep it a clean race, finishing just inside the top-ten and earning valuable championship points for his team, TJ Speed Motorsports.
“Race one was tough,” explained Weir. “We had such a great car but just didn’t get the chance to prove it, but in race two we showed the pace that has been there all weekend. It was important that we had a clean race for this one and we were able to manage that and bring home crucial championship points.”
Weir added, “It was a good learning weekend in St. Petersburg, and I want to thank TJ Speed for the fantastic car. They deserved a better result for race one but after the contact, they were able to give me a speedy car and turn it around for race two and I was able to get inside the top-ten. So overall I would consider this weekend a success. We’ll be ready to come back better and faster in Sebring.”
Christian Weir will pick his current pace back up in rounds three and four of the USF Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires at Sebring International Raceway in just two weeks. The series has had multiple practices at the 3.74-mile, 17-turn Florida road course during the off-season and should make for some great racing.
