Podcast #47 – Racing Legend and Autobahn Member Bobby Rahal, Part 1

Aug 26, 2020 | Podcast, Uncategorized

In 1986, I went to my first Indianapolis 500 race.  Back in the day, it was impossible to get good seats at the Indianapolis 500.  We were lucky enough to know a few people who helped us out and  found some tickets.  As I remember, it was my karate teacher and union official who found four tickets.  Then a buddy of mine, his dad worked for the telephone company who was a sponsor of the event, found us a couple more.  I will never forget May of 1986.  Myself and five of my college friends went to the time trials, practice days, carburetor day and the race, Sunday May 25th. As luck would have it, it was the first time the race was completely rained out!  We went back home excited to come back the next day, Monday May 26th.  That also was a rain out!  We were broke college kids and there was no way we were going to let our tickets go unused.    That year was special in so many ways as Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, drove a corvette as the pace car.  An incredibly special day for a future fighter pilot like myself.  Back to the race.  With two days rained out, we came back the following Saturday May 31st to watch Autobahn’s very own Bobby Rahal take the checkered flag.  I have to be honest, I waited until the 3rd season of the Autobahn Country Club Podcast to interview Bobby, because I wanted to get better and try and figure out my interview style and prefect my game.  In January of 2020, we got together in his garage at the track 33 years after having watched him cross the finish line at the Indy 500.  It was a memorable day to get to spend a morning with the racing legend.  This is the Podcast’s first 2-part interview.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  And now here is Bobby Rahal on the Autobahn Country Club Podcast.
